Seymour Marine Discovery Center: Bringing Marine Science to Life
Gizmo Art Production fabricated and installed a dynamic, research-focused interactive experience for the Seymour Marine Discovery Center that showcases marine science, climate research, and ongoing discoveries from California’s Central Coast.
Designed as a flexible and adaptable exhibit platform, the installation combines digital media, hands-on interactives, artifact displays, and immersive storytelling within a cohesive architectural environment inspired by the Monterey Bay coastal ecosystem. The exhibit creates an engaging space where visitors can explore current scientific research while gaining a deeper understanding of the region’s unique marine environment and the importance of environmental stewardship.
At the center of the exhibit is a large-format digital display that presents current research, scientific visualizations, and multimedia content from the Seymour Marine Discovery Center and its affiliated researchers. Integrated touchscreen stations allow visitors to explore data, stories, research findings, and marine science topics in greater depth, creating an interactive experience that encourages curiosity and discovery.
Surrounding the central media hub are custom-fabricated modular display cases featuring marine specimens, artifacts, and interpretive content. Designed with flexibility in mind, these exhibits can be updated as new research emerges, ensuring the visitor experience remains current and relevant as scientific understanding continues to evolve.
Throughout the space, custom-fabricated architectural elements help establish a distinctive visual identity rooted in the natural environment of Monterey Bay, including laser-cut kelp-inspired graphics and marine-themed patterns that reinforce the exhibit’s connection to the coastal ecosystem. Interactive features encourage visitor participation and exploration, while an enclosed media alcove provides a more focused audiovisual environment for deeper engagement with scientific content and storytelling.
Gizmo’s scope included the fabrication and integration of exhibit structures, architectural elements, display cases, graphics, interactive components, and media infrastructure, transforming the design vision into a durable and engaging visitor experience. Built for longevity, the exhibit allows content, graphics, and digital media to be refreshed over time, supporting the Discovery Center’s mission to communicate ongoing scientific research and environmental stewardship to future generations.
Through a combination of craftsmanship, technology integration, and thoughtful interpretation, the completed installation serves as a central destination for communicating marine science, climate research, and conservation efforts to visitors of all ages.
