Silent Stream is a large-scale site-specific public artwork by Jim Campbell and Werner Klotz located on the platform level of San Francisco’s Union Square/Market Street Station.
Fabricated by Demiurge, the sculpture takes the form of a flowing stainless steel ribbon extending approximately 250 feet through the station. Composed of thousands of highly polished stainless steel discs, the artwork winds overhead through the station’s structural framework, creating a dynamic visual experience that changes with movement, light, and perspective.
As trains arrive and depart and passengers move through the station, the mirrored surfaces reflect fragments of the activity below, transforming everyday transit into an interactive visual experience. From certain vantage points, visitors can catch their own reflections within the polished discs suspended above the platform.
Gizmo Art Production provided installation services for the project, coordinating the placement and assembly of the extensive suspended artwork within the complex transit environment.
