A Walk in the Wild: Continuing John Muir’s Journey
Oakland Museum of California
Gizmo Art Production provided full-scale museum exhibit fabrication in California for A Walk in the Wild: Continuing John Muir’s Journey, a major 2011–2012 exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA). Working in collaboration with West Office Exhibition Design, Gizmo transformed gallery space into an immersive natural environment celebrating the legacy of John Muir.
Designed as a multisensory “walk” through California’s wilderness, the exhibition explored Muir’s life as a writer, activist, and pioneering environmentalist while connecting visitors to modern conservation efforts and “Modern Day Muirs.”
Exhibit Fabrication Scope
As a California-based museum exhibit fabrication studio, Gizmo engineered and constructed large-scale scenic environments and interactive components designed for durability, safety, and high visitor engagement.
Key fabricated elements included:
-
A dynamic glacier jump experience
-
A monumental giant sequoia recreation inspired by Muir’s historic forest fire shelter
-
A sculptural waterfall environment
-
A mountain-climbing photo opportunity
-
Immersive panoramic scenic backdrops
-
Interactive sensory stations incorporating tactile, sound, and environmental effects
-
Custom museum-grade display cases housing historical artifacts, including correspondence from Theodore Roosevelt
-
A historically detailed replica of John Muir’s office
Every element was fabricated to meet museum conservation standards while supporting heavy daily visitor traffic.
